The Synagogue believes in serious, long-term projects in social justice. It also believes in the transformational power of eggs, butter, flour, and sugar. In the summer of 2011, Rabbi Marc Fitzerman convened a group of the Synagogue’s best bakers to create a master cookie that would serve as the template for a line of small-batch, artisanal products. “Let the games begin!”

Fitzerman hoped to crush the competition with a thin cookie interlaced with coconut. Good luck with that. He, in turn, was crushed by a monster hit by Nancy Cohen, who has since become the presiding genius of the Altamont Bakery. With product development behind us, we entered into a partnership with Mental Health Association Oklahoma. In the last several years, we have employed dozens of intermittently homeless, mentally ill citizens of Tulsa, who bake side-by-side with Synagogue volunteers. Many have gone on to full-time employment. For all of us, the bakery has been a source of meaning and joy. To date, we have baked nearly 350,000 cookies, and gained a large and devoted following in Tulsa.
